Financial Aid for MSU Graduate Students

Graduate students are eligible for a few types of financial aid. Fellowships (gift aid) are rare for online programs at MSU, but there are many other options to help you pay for your degree, including:

  • Payment Plans through MSU Controller’s Office > to spread out tuition payments over time.
  • Federal Loans with a FAFSA application > eligible if taking 2 or more courses. Recent rates are less than 9%.
  • Private Loans without a FAFSA application > many options, but borrow carefully!
  • Tuition Reimbursement through your employer or state programs.
  • Loan Forgiveness for Undergraduate Borrowing can eliminate federal loans from your undergraduate program if you are a Teacher, you work for the U.S. government, or you work for a non-profit.
  • Veteran Educational Benefits are available, though FLT tuition is already lower than in-state tuition.

Payment Plans

MSU Controller’s Office – Payment Plan: https://ctlr.msu.edu/COStudentAccounts/PaymentPlanFAQ.aspx

You do not have to pay your tuition all at once each semester. MSU offers interest-free payment plans. Contact the Controller’s Office directly with questions.

Federal Loans for U.S. residents

If you are a U.S. resident, you are eligible to apply for FAFSA loans. Note that for FAFSA you must enroll in at least 2 courses each semester (considered half-time for graduate students).

Loan Forgiveness

If you are still paying off federal loans from your undergraduate education, you may be eligible for programs that forgive (cancel) loans. Teachers are eligible if you in a Teacher Shortage Area based on the subject that you teach (including world languages and ESL, in almost every state) or working in a low-income school.
