MAFLT Graduate Handbook
The Master of Arts in Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT) Graduate Program Handbook describes the MAFLT Program, outlines the steps in the application process, lists degree requirements, reviews the courses that are taught in the program, and describes the policies and procedures related to the MAFLT Degree Program at Michigan State University. Library Resource Page
As you enter graduate school and navigate your way through courses and assignments, the MSU Library will provide a wide range of important resources. Distance-based students including those in the MAFLT can access academic journals and electronic books just as you would if you were on campus, and you can also access physical books by requesting a scan of a chapter or even having the book sent to you. The MAFLT has a dedicated subject area librarian, Stephanie Perentesis, and she has created a library guide specifically for our program and and the work that our students do. Technical Support
Courses in the MAFLT Program at MSU are all online. For full participation, you will need reliable and fairly fast internet access, a webcam and microphone for virtual meetings and recording presentations, and Microsoft Office software or software that is compatible with it. Students and faculty at MSU can download Microsoft products at no additional cost. Go to spartan365.msu.edu and click the link to install Office in the top right corner.
Courses are administered through MSU’s learning management system, D2L Brightspace (https://d2l.msu.edu/). When you enroll in a class, you will automatically be added to the D2L page for each course. When the instructor opens the course at the beginning of the semester, you will receive an email (at your MSU email account) to alert you that the course is open.
The following sites will also be useful to you:
- Distance Learning Services – lib.msu.edu/dls – links to resources and contact info for the DLS Help Desk, which is available 24/7.
- SpartanMail – spartanmail.msu.edu – This email account is the most important way that MAFLT instructors communicate with students. Please check it every day. You can set it up with Outlook on your desktop and mobile devices or forward it to another email account.
- Spartan365 – tech.msu.edu/technology/collaborative-tools/spartan365/ – An array of tools included in Office365, including free download of Microsoft Office Pro.
- Google Apps for Education – googleapps.msu.edu/. Access to Drive, Calendar, Sites, Classroom, etc. with MSU NetID. Using your MSU access provides for greater security.
- Kaltura MediaSpace – mediaspace.msu.edu – Allows faculty and students to create, upload, and share videos. MediaSpace also provides tools for recording presentations.
- Zoom – msu.zoom.us – Video conferencing software, similar to Skype or Google Hangouts.

Financial Information and Student Accounts
MAFLT courses have the same tuition for in-state and out-of-state students. Students must be officially accepted to the MAFLT Program to receive this rate. Lifelong Learners (continuing education students not enrolled in the full MA) pay a different rate. See our FAQs or MSU Lifelong Education for more information.

This year that cost is listed as $700 per credit, which means about $2100 per course. Fees and materials will add to that cost, but usually run less than $100 per semester.
